St. Clair County Conservation District
St. Clair County Conservation District
Conservation Districts are independent units of state government, responsible for carrying out natural resource stewardship programs at the local level. In our county, this is achieved through both conservation education and field applications of conservation practices. Across the United States, nearly 3,000 Conservation Districts help local communities use our natural resources wisely. There is a Conservation District in every county of Alabama. You can find your county on the Alabama Soil and Water Conservation Committee website. The District partners with its sister agency, the local USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in a grassroots led conservation effort with Farm Bill programs such as: the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), and Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP). Together, our District Conservationist and team of Board Members decide and rank the resource concerns for the programs each year.
Conservation Programs
Through the USDA-NRCS partnership, the District is able to assist in locally led, volunteer conservation with Farm Bill Programs. There is a conservation practice for your farm or land! Get financial cost-sharing with practices like invasive species, cover crops, tree and shrub establishment, prescribed burning, rotational grazing, heavy use areas, stream crossings, cross fencing, high tunnel structures, irrigation, and erosion control just to name a few.
Conservation Education
The Conservation District works with many partners to provide conservation education through annual events and other special programs. Programs like the Water Festival, Forest in the Classroom, Farm Day, Forestry & Land Judging are some programs available to students in the county. Other adult programs like Rain Barrel Workshops, Forestry Workshops and Tours, Program Outreach Meetings are also held on occasion.
Our Conservation District Board
The St. Clair County Conservation District typically meets on the 3rd Tuesday every other month to conduct business. The meetings are open to the public; however, you are encouraged to call ahead and verify the location and time as they can change to due to scheduling conflicts.
Our Board Members: Donald Ray Walker (Chairman), Tim Alsup (Vice-Chairman), Garry Staples (Treasurer), Michael Bowling, David Carroll, & Charity Mitcham (Advisor).
